ARCHES is now hiring full-time, part-time, and casual Addictions Specialists for Supervised Consumption Services. This is an exciting opportunity at ARCHES. The agency provides Harm Reduction programming to Southwestern Alberta as well as support services to people living with HIV/AIDS and/or HCV.

Addictions Specialist

Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, the Addictions Specialist will have a good understanding of substance use, mental health, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C, harm reduction and population health principles. The Addictions Specialist is a member of an interdisciplinary team providing Supervised Consumption Services. This position requires a professional who is committed to harm reduction and passionate about working with people who use drugs and/or are living with mental health issues. The Addictions Specialist will conduct comprehensive substance use assessments, provide formal and informal counselling, direct referrals to detox and treatment as well as assist with systems navigation support to access the same. The Addictions Specialist, alongside a Nurse, will supervise clients who are administering their own substances. The Addictions Specialist will work closely with a team of clinicians and other professionals to support the improved health and wellness of people who use drugs in our community. This position is responsible for promoting harm reduction and, when indicated by clients, integrating recovery and treatment for substance use issues.


The Addictions Specialist will hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Addictions, Social Work, Public Health or a related human service field; a Masters degree is preferred. The applicant will have at least two year’s professional experience with substance use/addictions, social services, counselling, and community development. Expertise in the area of harm reduction and addictions counselling is required. The Addictions Specialist must hold a valid driver’s licence and have access to an insured reliable vehicle. A Criminal Background Check including vulnerable sector, current and clear Youth Intervention Check, and valid First Aid Certificates are required. Criminal Record Checks and Youth Intervention Checks will be renewed every three (3) years.
